WA: Author fined for contempt of royal commission

Maverick author AVON LOVELL has escaped a jail term for for refusing to testify atthe West Australian royal commission into police corruption.

He's received a $30,000 fine instead.

LOVELL, a supporter of the MICKELBERG brothers who were convicted over the 1982 PerthMint swindle, has been found guilty of three counts of contempt by the WA Supreme Courtand fined $10,000 for each.

He's also been ordered to pay the royal commission's court costs.

LOVELL was summonsed to appear before the royal commission in July but failed to turnup, then two days later he refused to be sworn in and stormed out.

He later apologised and undertook to give evidence as required.

Justice MICHAEL MURRAY said he was particularly disturbed by LOVELL'S previous fiveconvictions for contempt of court and had he not apologised, the only appropriate sentencewould have been imprisonment.

It's believed the royal commission had wanted to question LOVELL over a sworn statementin which former detective TONY LEWANDOWSKI admitted to framing the MICKELBERG brothers.
